John 15:9-11
9 "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.
10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love.
11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

1. The Joy that does not depend on Circumstances (v11)

Jesus is modeling a truth, not just teaching it
Jesus knew all that was gonna happen but He was still joyful

1 Thessalonians 5:18
` give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. `
IN all circumstances, not FOR all circumstances.
God can work out bad things for Good.

Romans 8:28
` And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose `
Quiet Confidence

2. The Joy that comes from following Jesus' ways (v10-11)

Generous people are joyful people.

1 John 5:3
` This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome `
God wants us to obey His commands

Proverbs 11:25
` A generous man will prosper;
he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. `

Colossians 3:13
` Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. `

3. The Joy that comes through Jesus' love (v9)

Source of Joy determines Strength of Joy
If your limited love can bring joy to someone, how much can God love bring joy to them?

Romans 8:38-39
38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 5:8
` But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. `

Purity of heart is to will one thing!

When we know how much God loves us, it becomes so easy to love God back/more!
Take time to seek God!

2. With all my soul - Decisions

Psuche - the seat of desires, choices, determination & will

Psalms 42:11
` 11 Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God. `

Making the right decision

3. With all my mind - Comprehension

Dianoia - faculty of understanding, thoughts & intelligence
Every thought that goes through my mind can either build me up or tear us down
Take Captive of the thought & make it obedient!
Positive thinking

Colossians 3:16
`16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
Substitute negative thoughts with the word of God
Take time to meditate on God's word

1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—
2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior,
4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time.
7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.

Pray CONTINUALLY!!
Prayer = Talking to God & Listening to God, not repeating words after words
Meditate & you will be more & more sensitive to God

Psalms 1:2-3
` 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers. `
When you engage in serious prayer, you will be changed!
When you speak to God, does He reassure you of what you pray about?

1. We should pray for God's favour for everyone (v1-3)

We should pray for people with authorities (leaders, kings, presidents...)
We should pray for our people, for spiritual growth, maturity & leadership.

Ephesians 6:12
` 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. `

Ephesians 6:18
` 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. `

Bring up requests to God & go to God with Expectations!

We can pray in:

Request - Strong & Earnest pleading (prayer with expectations)
Prayer - Simply talking to God
Intercession - Going before God on behalf of others
Thanksgiving - Expressing our gratitude to God

2. We should pray for others to respond to God's truth (v4-7)

Who should we pray for?

a) Praying for people who are far from God (v4-6)

John 17:20 (NLT)
` 20 “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. `

It's the training before the race that help them succeed
Prayer is training before the battle

Luke 18:1
` 1 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. `
Persistent prayer leads to increased patience & desire

Romans 10:1
` 1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. `

b) Pray for Christ followers (v7)

Pray for:
i) Opportunity

Colossians 4:3
` 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. `

1 Corinthians 16:9
`9 because a great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me. `

ii) Clarity

Colossians 4:4
` 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. `

iii) Growth

Colossians 4:5-6
` 5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.
6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. `

Luke 14:15-24 - The Parable of the Great Banquet
15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, "Blessed is the man who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God."
16 Jesus replied: "A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests.
17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, 'Come, for everything is now ready.'
18 "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, 'I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.'
19 "Another said, 'I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.'
20 "Still another said, 'I just got married, so I can't come.'
21 "The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.'
22 " 'Sir,' the servant said, 'what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.'
23 "Then the master told his servant, 'Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full.

Isaiah 25:6-9
6 On this mountain the LORD Almighty will prepare
a feast of rich food for all peoples,
a banquet of aged wine—
the best of meats and the finest of wines.
7 On this mountain he will destroy
the shroud that enfolds all peoples,
the sheet that covers all nations;
8 he will swallow up death forever.
The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears
from all faces;
he will remove the disgrace of his people
from all the earth.
The LORD has spoken.
9 In that day they will say,
"Surely this is our God;
we trusted in him, and he saved us.
This is the LORD, we trusted in him;
let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation."

All is used 5 times - it's for EVERYBODY!

Attitudes to filling the open chair

1. Do not be discouraged by rejection/excuses (v21)

Owner of the house was angry but he didn't dwell in the negative.
He didn't cancel the banquet, instead he sent to invite the poor.

Matthew 8:34
` Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region. `

Do not give in to rejection!

1 Corinthians 15:58 (NLT)
` So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless. `

Let's have stubborn love!

2. Have a sense of urgency (v21)

Urgency not = forceful!
Window of time (limited time)
The only thing we can only do on Earth is Evangelism/ Spread the love of God!

Romans 13:11-12 (NLT)
` 11 This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.
12 The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. `

Acts 20:24
` However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace. `

Jesus came so that we can have the fullness of life

3. Have burden for ALL people (v22-23)

a) 1st Prejudice: The fulfilling life that is for free.

2 Peter 3:9
` The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. `

b) 2nd Prejudice: Christians are more concerned about my conversion rather than my life.

Christians care more about whether i convert rather than why and what made me convert.

c) 3rd Prejudice: Christians thinks we are more upright than others.

The bible is not used to judge others, but for judging ourselves
We need to be a loving group who accepts others.

Jonah 4 - Jonah's Anger at the Lord 's Compassion
1 But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry.
2 He prayed to the LORD, "O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.
3 Now, O LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live."
4 But the LORD replied, "Have you any right to be angry?"
5 Jonah went out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city.
6 Then the LORD God provided a vine and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the vine.
7 But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the vine so that it withered.
8 When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah's head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, "It would be better for me to die than to live."
9 But God said to Jonah, "Do you have a right to be angry about the vine?"
"I do," he said. "I am angry enough to die."
10 But the LORD said, "You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight.
11 But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?"

1. People matter to God more than our self-centredness (v1-4)

Symptoms of Self-Centredness:

a) Indifference

Can't be bothered
Mind our own business

Matthew 16:26
` What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? `

Your soul is more important than achievements, money, health...

b) Fear

Many people are fearful!
Fear is often a length of love
Love overcomes ALL fears!
Love others more by actions.

c) Shyness

Don't let shyness hinder us from fulfilling God's purpose

2 timothy 1:7
` For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. `

It is a symptom of Pride
Be God-conscious, not man-conscious!
Meeting the needs of others instead of worrying about consequences!
It is a symptom of Self-centredness

2. People matter to God more than we at times comprehend (v5-11)

a) God cares for each individual much (v11a)

God knows the actual number of people in Nineveh (120,000)
Each lost sheep is important to God!

Luke 15:3-5
` Then Jesus told them this parable: "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders `

b) God has been working on our life since the day we were born (v10-11a)

God was working in our lives even while we were still sinners.

Psalm 139:13
` For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. `

c) God really feels for people who are far away from Him (v11b)

Parents are only the channel, God IS the SOURCE.!!
God had compassion & his love endured.
